Transitional Kindergarten is a public school program for age-eligible students turning 5 between September 2, 2020 and December 2, 2020. Students who turn 5 on September 1, or before, are eligible for Kindergarten and students who turn 5 after December 2, 2020 will wait until the 2021-2022 school year and enroll in Kindergarten.

Registration for Transitional Kindergarten is open now and can be reached through the CUSD website.  After completing the online portion, required documents will be accepted at the school sites beginning on March 5, 2020. Students are assigned to an elementary site for TK based on their home school in the following manner.

Jefferson Elementary School: Serving Buena Vista, Calavera Hills, Jefferson, Hope, and Magnolia
Poinsettia Elementary School: Serving Aviara Oaks, Kelly, Pacific Rim, and Poinsettia

TK registration continues throughout the summer and into the school year.  If a class at the assigned school is full, CUSD will offer at the other school listed above. Families may submit an Open Enrollment/Intra District Transfer request to attend the other school.

Transitional Kindergarten Defined:

Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program for those children who turn five between September 2nd and December 2nd.  The classes offer children developmentally appropriate curriculum that is a hybrid blend of California Preschool Foundations and the Kindergarten standards. Transitional Kindergarten teachers hold valid California Teaching credentials and the teachers in Carlsbad plan together and share similar curriculum.

The difference between Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten:

Transitional Kindergarten is not a replication of kindergarten.  The Transitional Kindergarten environment includes more opportunities for social-emotional and language development through dramatic play, small group instruction, and intentional teaching through hands-on activities.  There is a focus on activities which develop large and small motor skills, attention span, and developing the ability to follow directions.  Traditional Kindergarten will focus on mastery of skills and attainment of content standards.
